Dilemmas of the President

The Regional Medical Assembly appointed me the president of the Regional Medical Chamber in Warsaw (OIL). I do not care about career or holding honourable offices which is well known to those who know me. I will do my best to carry out the following programme presented during the election campaign:
1. Fulfilling the Chamber's financial obligations arisen in connection with the purchase and renovation of the building at 18 Puławska street serving as the new headquarters of the Regional Medical Chamber in Warsaw (OIL);
2. Increasing the role of Regional Medical Chamber delegates and facilitating their activities in the work of our Chamber's basic cells
3. Activating Medical Self-government Groups and convincing doctors that they are those who can decide how their own environment operate
4. Creating mechanisms defending dignity of doctor's profession in the following relations: a doctor - a doctor, a doctor - a patient, a doctor - the mass media;
5. Establishing a team responsible for reacting to media attacks based on unverified information, false statements or emotional comments of "victims" without an objective assessment of the situation;
6. Providing doctors with legal advice on cases related to employment as well as on civil and criminal cases
7. Increasing aid to retired, single doctors who are in difficult financial position;
8. Commencing doctors' trainings in areas selected on the basis of the environment's needs analysis and training market research.

These are simple tasks to complete - but only under the condition that all members of our professional corporation are involved in their carrying out. Our Chamber bands together not aliens but us - doctors and dentists. If our corporation is weak, it means that we are hopeless and do nothing to strengthen it. If we tarnish its reputation and good name by our attitudes or statements, at the same time we bring discredit upon ourselves. Let's not blame everybody for everything and let's give up enormous expectations, if we do not make any effort to change the bad situation. The combination of our apathy and resistance or incompetence of officials and political decission-makers together with financial deficiencies resulting from the state budget limitations makes the situation as bad as it is. It's a shame that there is only a small group of activists who spare no time and, often at the expense of their own family life, try to bring improvement to the quality of our medical life.
In this issue of "Puls" (see the next page) we include a form which you can use to report the problems you face in your everyday work. All the information obtained through the forms shall become the ground for activities of the Intervention Commission of our Chamber. I will share with you my remarks and opinions from observation of the environment's involvement in strengthening our corporate life. I wish all of you and your relatives the best of luck in the year 2010, but above all, health and energy for hard medical work, as well as patience with the government's ideas and bureaucracy. I hope you will escape all stressful situations and circumstances which could become the basis for blames or claims. I wish you a sense of belonging and commitment to our corporation activities. And finally, have a rest and enjoy your winter holiday time.

Mieczysław Szatanek
